French drains in clay soil: what Australian homeowners should know

Large parts of Australia, western Sydney, much of Melbourne, the Adelaide plains, sit on reactive clay. Clay barely lets water through, so it pools on the surface and swells and shrinks with the seasons, which is hard on slabs and footings. That makes drainage critical, but it also means a French drain in clay needs more care than one in free-draining sand.

Why clay changes the job
